Making up some of the most commonly used metals in the world, ‘red metals’ are frequently used across the construction, architecture, telecommunications and machinery sectors. But, what are red metals?

Red Metals

Characterised by a unique reddish hue, the three types of metals known as ‘red metals’ are copper, brass and bronze.

Despite all sharing copper within their chemical composition in common, red metals are actually quite different in terms of their individual composition, quality and application(s).

Copper

Known for being one of the most valuable non-ferrous metals to sell, copper can hold up to 95% of its original value, a much higher capacity than other metals. Infinitely recyclable, copper can also be recycled again and again without losing any of its original properties, e.g. conductivity, malleability and durability, etc.
This translates to a high demand for copper across several industries, including the scrap metal recycling and trading sector.

Brass

A common alloy metal used in day-to-day essentials, such as electrical sockets, locks and door handles, brass is composed of varying levels of copper or zinc. Depending on which makes up more of the composition, this will impact certain features of the brass, e.g. the colour or the strength.

Similar to copper, brass can also be recycled over and over without losing any of its original properties, such as microbial resistance, malleability and ductility, etc.

Bronze

A copper alloy with a reddish-brown colour, bronze is made up of 88% copper and 12% tin. Harder than copper, yet still malleable, bronze has a low metal-to-metal friction and can easily be shaped into different products.

Bronze also forms a natural protective layer (called patina) on its surface that keeps it corrosion-resistant.
