A Guide to the London Metal Exchange

At our local scrap metal recycling yard, we always base our competitive pricing on the reliable London Metal Exchange (LME). But, what is the LME, what do they do and how does this help us and our customers?

Kas Metal Trading has created the following guide on the LME to help you find out!

What is the London Metal Exchange?

A member of the HKEX Group, the LME is the world centre for industrial metal pricing, hedging and trading. The majority of all non-ferrous metal-related business is transacted via their platforms.

The LME combines the physical industry with the financial community to create a stronger and more controlled market where there is always a buyer and a seller, there is always a standardised price and there is always the choice to transfer or take on risk, 24/7.

What Does the London Metal Exchange Do?

  1. Governance – operates within a well-defined governance structure and practices accountability, transparency, fairness and integrity.
  2. Regulation – provides the environment for trading and regulates the operation of the market.
  3. Responsibility – enforces new rules that apply to all of their listed brands, ensuring that metal delivered against LME contracts is responsibly sourced.
  4. Initiatives – through client engagement, discussion papers, service/strategic reviews, product development, technology roadmaps and committee feedback, the exchange is always striving to improve the services they offer to the market.

The London Metal Exchange for Non-Ferrous Metal Trading

In terms of scrap metal recycling, the LME prices for non-ferrous contracts are used as the reference and basis for all physical trading at our local scrapyard. The global LME standard can also be used for portfolio valuations, commodity indices and metal ETFs (exchange-traded funds).

Designed with the metal community in mind, the LME physical non-ferrous contracts reflect the nature and timing of bilaterally negotiated metal trades. LME non-ferrous contract users can transfer or take on risk against metal prices daily out to 3 months, weekly out to 6 months and monthly out to anything up to 123 months (over 10 years in the future).
